The best Character.AI alternative depends on why you are leaving. If characters keep forgetting your plot, pick a story app such as Euphoria or a memory-first companion such as Kindroid. If the problem is ads and daily caps, Talkie or PolyBuzz give you a similar chat with a different set of limits. If it is the filter, Janitor AI and Chai are looser, with trade-offs in quality and polish. Prices and limits below are as of 1 September 2026 and change often, so check the app before paying.

How we picked, and a disclosure

We make Euphoria: AI Choices, which is on this list, so read the ranking with that in mind. We have tried to be fair: every number is sourced in the footer, and the apps are grouped by the problem they solve rather than ranked one to six.

The main distinction we draw is chat versus story. Character.AI, Talkie, Chai, PolyBuzz and Kindroid are all chats: you talk to a character, one message at a time, and the app’s memory decides how much of the past it can see. A story app works differently. In Euphoria, every scene is illustrated, with your own character and outfits drawn into it, and a story runs across chapters with a coherent plot and memory that carries from one to the next, so a choice in chapter one still matters in chapter five. You type any action in free text and the AI writes the scene around it. If what you wanted from Character.AI was a plot rather than a conversation, that difference matters more than any pricing detail.

Most other “best alternatives” pages in 2026 are written by an app that ranks itself first. Ours is too. The difference we can offer is dated numbers and a plain statement of who should skip each option.

If characters keep forgetting: Euphoria or Kindroid

Euphoria: AI Choices is the pick for anyone who wanted Character.AI to be a book with them in it. It is a free download on iOS and Android with optional in-app purchases, covers romance, fantasy, isekai, mystery and sci-fi, and lets you create and share your own stories in any language. Because the story is structured in chapters, memory is not a setting you buy; the plot and its consequences are the product. It is not a chat app, so if you want to text a character about your day, it is the wrong tool. If you are new to the genre we lean on most, start with What is isekai?.

Kindroid is the companion-chat answer to the same complaint. It focuses on one companion at a time, with a Codex system where you write the personality, backstory and key memories in free text. Reviewers rate it better than most consumer companions at staying coherent over dozens of interactions, and it holds a 4.46 out of 5 on Google Play across more than 20,000 reviews. The free tier gives two companion slots and unlimited text on the Lite model but no deep memory. Standard is $13.99 a month, or $139.99 a year on the web, and the Ultra and MAX memory add-ons are monthly-only at $24.99 and $59.99 on top. That is the most expensive stack on this list if you go all in. It is built by a team of about five, which is either a reassurance or a risk depending on your temperament.

If it is the ads and daily caps: Talkie or PolyBuzz

Talkie is the closest like-for-like swap. It has the same companion-style chat and voice calls in a cleaner app. The free tier is reported at around 50 messages a day with ads and voice calls of about two minutes, and free accounts lose access to chats older than 60 days. Talkie+ Standard is $9.99 a month, or $49.99 for the first year on the current promotion, renewing at $95.99. It removes ads and caps and extends cloud sync to 120 days. Gems, the in-app currency, are sold separately. Talkie+ Pro at $24.99 a month exists but its extra features were still listed as coming soon in the sources we checked.

PolyBuzz, formerly Poly.AI, is where you go for sheer volume: a catalog of over 20 million characters and more than 10 million downloads. The free tier has no message cap, but an ad break interrupts roughly every five messages, which is a frequent complaint behind its 3.8-star Google Play average. Paid tiers run from Basic at $9.90 a month to Ultimate at $29.90, and memory is where the tiers bite: free and Basic chats prune after about 30 messages, Premium keeps around 100, and only Ultimate has permanent memory across sessions. The web version is stripped down, so treat it as a phone app.

If it is the filter: Janitor AI or Chai

Character.AI is safe-for-work by policy, and its own CEO said in June 2025 that the filter too often blocked harmless content. If that is your reason for leaving, two options are meaningfully looser. Both are aimed at adults; check the age rating before downloading.

Janitor AI is web only, with no official iOS app. The platform does not filter model output in private chats; moderation applies to the public character marketplace. It is free with the default JanitorLLM, which reviewers describe as repetitive and prone to speaking for the user. The real appeal is connecting your own model: paste an API key from OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek or KoboldAI and pay that provider per token, which reviewers put anywhere from about $1 to $15 a month depending on the model. Pro at $9.99 a month lifts limits and adds priority queueing. There is no voice or image generation. It is the most powerful option here and the most fiddly, and the setup will put off anyone who just wants to open an app and talk. Good OOC notes matter more here than anywhere else, because you are steering a raw model.

Chai is the mobile-first middle ground. The free tier gives about 70 messages that refill on a rolling timer, with ads. Premium at $13.99 a month, or $134.99 a year, removes ads and the timer and unlocks higher-tier models, though one source lists $8.99, so pricing clearly varies by region. Ultra at $29.99 a month adds priority responses, longer replies and, importantly, the longer memory. Reviewers noted memory drift around message 20 to 40 even on paid tiers, and Premium subscribers complain the model gets repetitive. Chai is easy and cheap to try, and the least satisfying of these for a long story.

What about Replika?

Replika is the best-known companion app, but it is a different product: one companion with coaching activities, and romantic mode, voice and AR behind Pro at $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year. It is not built for playing characters or stories, and it is not a Character.AI replacement for most people leaving because of memory or filters.

Who should switch, and to what

• You want a plot that pays off: Euphoria. Illustrated, chapter-based, free with optional in-app purchases.
• You want a companion that remembers everything and can pay for it: Kindroid.
• You want Character.AI without the ads and caps: Talkie, if you are fine with the 60-day chat expiry on free, or c.ai+ itself at $9.99.
• You want the biggest free library and can tolerate ads: PolyBuzz.
• You want control over the model and no filter on private chats: Janitor AI, with your own API key.
• You want a quick, cheap mobile chat with a lighter filter: Chai.

Who should stay on Character.AI

• Anyone attached to a specific community character. No other library comes close, and the free tier is still unlimited basic chat.
• Fans of group formats. Scenes, Streams, Stories and the new (c.ai) series microdramas have no real equivalent elsewhere.
• Under-18s. Since 25 November 2025 you cannot use open-ended chat there, but most of the alternatives above are adult products, so Character.AI’s teen formats remain the sensible option.
• People whose only complaint is friction. Ads, queues and swipe caps all go away with c.ai+ at $9.99 a month, which is cheaper than half the paid tiers on this list.
