Best Interactive Story Apps (2026): Episode, Choices and AI

Six interactive story apps compared as of October 2026: Episode, Choices, Chapters and Romance Club against AI Dungeon and Euphoria, on price, currencies and freedom.

The best interactive story app depends on whether you want to read a story someone wrote or play one that is written around you. For scripted choose-your-path stories, Episode has the biggest library and Choices new chapters every week. For stories where you can type anything, AI Dungeon gives an open text sandbox and Euphoria adds illustrated scenes of your own character and a plot that remembers you across chapters. Prices and limits below are as of 7 October 2026 and change often.

First, a disclosure and the two kinds of story app

We make Euphoria: AI Choices, so we compete with every app on this page. We have kept the numbers sourced and said where competitors do something better.

Interactive story apps now come in two kinds, and the difference matters more than any price.

Scripted choose-your-path apps such as Episode, Choices, Chapters and Romance Club are written by people. You pick from two or three options at each decision, and the branches were all planned in advance. The writing and art are hand-made, but the biggest choices usually cost premium currency, and reading is rationed by passes, keys, tickets or a similar currency.

AI-driven story apps such as AI Dungeon and Euphoria write the story as you play. You type what your character does, in your own words, and the AI writes the next scene. There is no list of options to run out of, but the quality depends on how well the AI keeps track of the story. We go deeper on that difference in our post on story apps versus chat apps.

The top-ranking roundups we checked for this search cover only the first kind. We cover both.

Episode, for the biggest library

Episode is the pick if you want the most to read. Its App Store listing advertises more than 150,000 interactive stories, and it holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating from 2.8 million ratings. Episode also lets anyone write and publish an interactive story on the platform. You create an avatar, and book clubs with reading challenges add a social layer.

The trade-off is the economy. Reading uses passes, which refill over time, and the choices that change a story most often cost gems. A user feedback analysis of App Store reviews found players enjoy the variety but object to key decisions requiring real money and to the frequency of ads. Gems cost $0.99 to $19.99 and VIP is $14.99 a month. It is rated 13+, lower than the 16+ of Choices and Chapters.

Choices: Stories You Play, for weekly chapters

Choices, from Pixelberry Studios, is the one to start with if you want studio-written stories that keep coming. New chapters arrive weekly across romance, thriller, fantasy and drama, and a ranking roundup from Udonis recommends it for exactly that and as a beginner-friendly start. It is rated 4.5 from 199,000 ratings.

It runs on two currencies. Keys start a chapter, and diamonds buy premium choices, outfits and scenes. The optional VIP subscription ($14.99) gives unlimited keys, diamond rewards and access to VIP-only stories, and there is a 24-hour VIP for a Day at $2.99 if you want to binge for a day. Diamond packs run from $1.99 to $99.99.

Chapters, for the best-looking books

Chapters, from Crazy Maple Studio, is often called the prettiest of the scripted apps; the Udonis roundup gives it that title. It is rated 4.4 from 116,000 ratings and adds new stories weekly, and its featured stories lean towards romance.

The catch is the cost of premium choices. Reading costs tickets, and free players get only a small stock that refills over time. Premium choices, outfits and romantic scenes cost about 12 to 17 diamonds each, while you earn about 2 diamonds per chapter or 4 per video ad. A review at All About Romance worked out that one 12-diamond choice per chapter costs roughly $24 to $31 per book, and that a 37-chapter book with two premium choices a chapter could pass $100. VIP is $9.99. We compared Chapters with AI romance apps in our AI romance story apps roundup.

Romance Club, for mature branching romance

Romance Club, from Your Story Interactive, is the scripted pick for adults. It is rated 18+, holds a 4.6 from 17,000 ratings, and the Udonis roundup says it leads on mature, branching romance. Stories have multiple endings across fantasy, drama, supernatural and mystery settings.

Its currencies are diamonds and tea, with a $9.99 Gold pass and diamond packs from $4.99 to $49.99. It gives daily login diamonds and runs Diamond Rush events that make premium choices free for 48 hours.

AI Dungeon, for total freedom

AI Dungeon is built for open-ended play. You type any action and the AI narrates what happens; reviewers describe it as excellent at go-anywhere, improvised storytelling. It runs on web, iOS and Android, and has a Safe, Moderate and Mature content setting.

The free Wanderer tier gives unlimited play on the free models with a 4k-token context and 25 memory slots. Paid tiers run from Journey at $14.99 a month (760 credits, 8k context) to Ultimate at $99.99 (5,200 credits, 32k context), with discounts for 6 or 12 months.

Memory is the common complaint. A 2026 review lists memory degradation on long stories, confusing credit pricing, and repetition on long campaigns. AI Dungeon gives free players Auto Summarization, a Memory Bank and Story Cards to fight this, and our guide to getting an AI to remember your story explains how to use them. It is also text first; images are generated with paid credits rather than drawn for every scene. If you have outgrown it, our AI Dungeon alternatives post compares the options.

Euphoria: AI Choices, for an AI story you can see

Euphoria sits between the two camps. Like AI Dungeon, you can type any action and the AI writes the scene. Like Episode or Choices, it looks like a story app rather than a text box: every scene is illustrated, and the illustrations show your own character in the outfits you chose, not a stock avatar.

The other thing we built it around is memory across chapters. Stories run over multiple chapters with a coherent plot, so what you did in chapter one still matters in chapter five. Story variables track relationships, health and skills, and players create and share their own stories, so an isekai adventure or a rivals-to-lovers mystery is a prompt away. Our guide to creating an AI character shows how to set up a lead worth playing.

The honest caveats: it needs an internet connection, it is on iOS and Android only, and its stories are written by players with the AI, so expect more variation in polish than in a studio-written app like Choices. It is free to download, with daily Essence rewards and optional purchases.

Who each app is for, and who should skip it

  • Pick Episode if you want the largest library and would like to write your own scripted story. Skip it if ads and pay-per-choice put you off.
  • Pick Choices if you want polished, professionally written stories with weekly chapters. Skip it if you dislike waiting for keys and will not pay for VIP or diamonds.
  • Pick Chapters if art and romance matter most and you can resist premium choices. Skip it if you tend to buy every diamond option; the per-book cost adds up.
  • Pick Romance Club if you are an adult who wants mature, branching romance with frequent free-choice events.
  • Pick AI Dungeon if you want a text sandbox that improvises around anything you type and you are happy to manage its memory tools.
  • Pick Euphoria if you want AI freedom with illustrated scenes of your own character and a plot that remembers you from chapter to chapter.
  • Skip all of the AI apps if you want a finished, hand-written story with a fixed ending; the scripted apps do that better.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best interactive story app in 2026?

For scripted choose-your-path stories, Episode has the biggest library (150,000+ stories) and Choices new chapters every week. If you want to type your own actions instead of picking from options, AI Dungeon offers an open text sandbox, and Euphoria: AI Choices adds illustrated scenes of your own character and memory across chapters.

What are the best apps like Episode?

Choices: Stories You Play and Chapters are the closest matches: scripted stories, customizable characters and premium choices paid for with diamonds. Romance Club suits adults who want mature branching romance. If Episode's options feel limiting, AI story apps such as AI Dungeon and Euphoria let you type any action and write the story around it.

Is there a choose-your-own-adventure app without paying for choices?

Scripted apps like Episode, Choices and Chapters let you play free but gate many premium choices behind gems or diamonds and ration reading with passes, keys or tickets. AI Dungeon's free tier allows unlimited play on its free models. In AI story apps there is no menu of premium options, because you type the choice yourself.

How much does Choices: Stories You Play cost?

Choices is free to download. Keys start chapters and diamonds buy premium choices and outfits. As of October 2026 on the US App Store, VIP costs $14.99 a month for unlimited keys, diamond rewards and VIP-only stories, VIP for a Day is $2.99, and diamond packs run from $1.99 to $99.99.

What is the difference between Episode and AI story apps?

Episode's stories are written in advance, so every branch and option was planned by an author, and premium choices cost gems. AI story apps such as AI Dungeon and Euphoria write each scene as you play, based on whatever action you type. You get more freedom, but quality depends on how well the AI remembers the story.
