AI Dungeon deserves credit first. It is the original go-anywhere sandbox: you type any action and a narrator responds, with no fixed plot and no wrong answers. Reviewers in 2026 still describe it as excellent at open-ended improvised storytelling, and its free Wanderer tier gives unlimited play on the free models, which is more than most rivals offer. Most people do not leave because it is bad. They leave because they want something it deliberately does not do: a plot that builds toward something, characters that stay consistent, better prose, or simply a cheaper bill.

The distinction we care most about is sandbox versus story. AI Dungeon, NovelAI, DreamGen and SillyTavern are sandboxes: the AI improvises from whatever is in its context window, and a Memory Bank, Lorebook or character card is your tool for stopping it from drifting. A story app works differently. In Euphoria, every scene is illustrated with your own character and outfits drawn into it, and a story runs across chapters with a coherent plot and memory that carries from one to the next, so a choice in chapter one still matters in chapter five. You still type any action in free text and the AI writes the scene around it, but the story has a shape. If the story keeps forgetting: Euphoria, NovelAI or DreamGen

Memory is the complaint that comes up most in AI Dungeon’s own community, and it is structural. The free tier’s 4k context is small, Story Cards depend on trigger words that misfire, and Auto Summarization compresses everything that came before. Euphoria: AI Choices avoids the wall by changing the structure. Because a story is built in chapters, the consequences of earlier choices are part of the plot rather than a memory the model has to retrieve. It is free on iOS and Android with optional in-app purchases, covers romance, fantasy, isekai, mystery and sci-fi, and lets you create and share your own stories. It is not a blank page, though: if you want a world that reacts to literally anything, with no authored cast at all, AI Dungeon or a sandbox below is closer to what you had. NovelAI is the sandbox with the best writing tools. It is positioned as a fiction writing assistant rather than a game, with Lorebook, Memory and Author’s Note fields to hold your world together, and the Opus tier at $25 a month publishes a 28,672-token context. There is no free plan, only a one-time Paper trial of 50 text generations, and every tier is monthly only with no annual discount. It is web only.

DreamGen is the sandbox to pick if you want long roleplay without the highest bill. Starter at $7.83 a month gives a 5,000-token context, Advanced at $19.35 gives 15,000, and Pro at $48.30 gives 30,000 with discounts on extra credits. It has a Roleplay Mode and a Story Mode, runs its own fine-tuned models, and has a free tier with daily credits, though we could not confirm the exact amount.

If it is the price: KoboldCpp and SillyTavern

AI Dungeon’s paid tiers run from $14.99 to $99.99 a month and are sold in credits and Memory Bank slots, which reviewers call confusing. The zero-cost answer is to run the model yourself.

KoboldCpp is a single program that runs open-weight models on your own machine. SillyTavern is the free, open-source front end that sits on top: character cards, World Info lorebooks, memory extensions and image plugins, but it generates nothing on its own. Together they are free and fully private, and they run on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The cost is hardware and time: SillyTavern suggests an NVIDIA card with 6 GB or more of VRAM for local models, or you point it at a paid API and pay per token. Budget an evening for setup. If that sounds like a chore rather than a hobby, DreamGen’s Starter tier is the cheapest hosted sandbox on this list.

If you wanted characters, not a world: Character.AI or Talkie

A common reason for leaving, according to a July 2026 roundup, is that people wanted casual character chat rather than adventure gameplay. If that is you, the chat apps are the right category, with their own limits.

Character.AI has the largest character library and unlimited basic chat on the free tier, with full-screen ads since April 2026, a daily swipe cap and a peak-hours queue. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. A June 2026 review estimated the base model’s working context at roughly 3,000 to 4,000 tokens, so it will forget faster than a paid AI Dungeon tier. Talkie is the companion-chat option with voice. The free tier is around 50 messages a day with ads, and free accounts lose access to chats older than 60 days. Talkie+ is $9.99 a month.
