How to Get an AI Story App to Remember Your Story

AI characters forget because chat apps only see a few thousand tokens of history. What that means, seven habits that keep a plot alive, and when to switch apps.

AI characters forget because a chat app only shows the model a window of recent messages, typically a few thousand tokens, and everything older silently drops out. You cannot make that window bigger, but you can control what stays inside it: pin the facts that matter, recap every 20 to 30 messages, keep names consistent, and use a lorebook for world details. Why the AI forgets in the first place

Every AI chat runs on a language model with a context window: the maximum amount of text it can see at one time, measured in tokens. A token is about four characters, so 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 English words. The character’s definition, any pinned memories, and your recent conversation all share that budget. When the conversation grows past it, the model drops the oldest messages. It does not know they existed, so it cannot tell you it forgot them. That is why a character who was devoted to you in message 30 is confused about your name in message 200.

Two further quirks make it worse. Models recall the beginning and end of their input better than the middle, so a plot point buried 60 messages back is weaker than one from the last scene even when both are technically in view. And what survives is not what mattered to you. A small detail that keeps getting mentioned stays alive, while a major event nobody referenced again is the first thing to go.

The practical numbers vary by app. For Character.AI, guides estimate the working context at roughly 4,000 to 8,000 tokens, or the last 50 to 150 exchanges. Talkie is estimated at 8,000 to 16,000, and in a March 2026 test its characters reliably recalled details planted 20 or more messages earlier in text mode, though memory sometimes dropped when switching to voice. None of these apps publishes an exact figure, so treat them as orders of magnitude.

Character.AI’s May 2026 memory overhaul is worth understanding if you use it, because it changed what the tools are called. Story Memory is the free-form field plus your pins, available to everyone. Facts are auto-extracted details about you, the character and side characters, and are c.ai+ only. The Memory Usage bar shows how much of the window is taken up by each. The company says it condenses older history in the background while keeping Story Memory and pins intact. Seven habits that keep a story coherent

1. Pin only the facts the story depends on

Pins are a small budget, 15 on Character.AI’s free tier, so spend them on things that break the story if forgotten: who the characters are to each other, where you are, what the character wants, and the two or three events everything else depends on. Do not pin a line of dialogue because you liked it. If your app has a persistent field like Story Memory, put the same facts there in the tersest form possible, because 400 characters goes fast.

2. Recap every 20 to 30 messages

This is the single most effective habit. When a scene ends, step out of character and ask the model to summarise what happened, then cut its answer down to bullet points and paste those into your memory field or pins. Guides that have tested this recommend a summary every 20 to 30 messages, or at the end of every scene, because waiting longer raises the odds that an event drops out of the window before it is saved. 3. Use the same words for the same things

Models latch on to exact strings. If the sword is “the Ashen Blade” in chapter one, do not call it “the grey sword” later. The same goes for names, places and nicknames. Consistent phrasing keeps a detail alive by making it recur, which is the only thing that reliably keeps something in a sliding window.

4. Write memory in lists, not prose

A memory field written as “Mira is a 28-year-old smuggler from the port city of Vell who owes money to the Harrow family and secretly wants to go home” costs more tokens and is harder for the model to parse than:

Mira: 28, smuggler, from Vell. Owes the Harrows. Wants to go home (secret).

Brackets, colons and attribute lists are cheaper and clearer. Save prose for the story itself.

5. Front-load and back-load what matters

Because models weight the start and end of their input, the character definition at the top and your most recent message at the bottom are the strongest positions. Restate a crucial fact in your own message when it is about to matter, rather than hoping the model finds it in the middle of the history.

6. Build a lorebook for the world

If your story has recurring places, factions or side characters, a lorebook stores each one as an entry with keywords, and the entry only enters the conversation when a keyword appears. It costs nothing until it is needed, which is exactly the property a small context window wants. Character.AI’s Lorebook launched in beta on 13 July 2026 for c.ai+ subscribers, with up to eight keywords per entry, and gained private lorebooks and mobile creation in August. 7. Start a new chat before the old one rots

Counter-intuitive, but a fresh chat seeded with a good summary and your pins will usually be more coherent than a 500-message chat where the model is working from condensed fragments. Treat chats like chapters: end one when its arc closes, carry the summary forward, and begin the next clean.

When to stop managing memory by hand

Everything above is a workaround for a chat app whose memory is a sliding window. It works, and if you are attached to a specific character on Character.AI it is worth the effort. But the habits add up to real work: you become the story’s continuity editor.

A story app takes a different route.
